Poet of the week

POET OF THE WEEK
May 30th 2018

To pick a single piece of work to celebrate from Phil this week is not easy, has anyone else noticed the way Phil posts his work in themes? This week he has blessed our minds with philosophical underwater lakes, hob nobs, the reality of nature that glorious sea poem and the honest truth of the screaming trees. It is inspiring to come across a poet that can cross between poetic genres. Phil's ability to write on all/most topics and themes is what gives his writing depth, it is what gives him as a writer depth...well done Mr :) +Phil Hall

THE SCREAMING TREES

(Inspired by Photosynthesis: Carbon Based Lifeforms)

We're killing our friends
Bringing our family to their knees,
The slaughter of the innocent
Listen to the screaming trees.

Pathways lead into the undergrowth
Where only a jaguar should tread,
Whispering vegetation with acoustic hum
And this is what it said....

"What about the forests?"
"No!"

Where will we go now?
The world's lawyers writing decrees,
As the axe strikes at terrified trunk
We're murdering the screaming trees.

Leafy carpet is trodden underfoot
And birds scatter on rainbow'd wing,
The cicada has lost its voice
Nightingales have ceased to sing.

"What about the forests?"
"Nope!"

Like a cancer draining her life away
Lungs of the world now bleed,
Choking and stripping our oxygen supply
A lingering death for our screaming trees.

Where the mighty oak woodland stood
Now monstrosities of brick and mortar,
Lorry and digger with metallic fangs
Lead the saplings to the slaughter.

"What about the forests?"
"No!"

Suited men and governments
Although elected, they do as they please,
Mahogany and walnut don't have a vote
Nobody listens to the screaming trees.

Swathes of ancient wonder cut down
The rape and plunder all around,
Screaming trees arms stretched pleading
Yet no one hears a sound.
