Poet of the week January 10th 2018
+karen hines This week we celebrate our dear friend and poet Karen Hines, always such an amazing source of encouragement and support within the communities, her poetry truly takes the reader on some amazing journeys. This weeks poem came from a darker place than usual, one that took great courage and I suspect the ripples of that courage will be felt by many. Congratulations Karen ♥
Dark Memories
It's ancient history now,
But the memories are as fresh
As the morning dew.
When he said you belong to me,
I thought it was out of love;
He was obsessed, I had no clue.
It was the literal meaning,
I was a slave to his commands,
Black eyes, broken bones,
If he was denied.
He made a mule of me, too;
Dangerous excursions on foreign soil,
Pistol in my mouth while I cried.
I convinced myself not to run;
Hid behind needles and drink.
My total destruction had begun.
I don't know how I could love him,
He turned me into a shell of myself.
But, love him, I did, in more ways than one.
I made all the usual excuses,
Family and friends saw through my lies;
They wanted him to go far away.
By then I was captive to his world,
Dependent on my cravings he doled out,
Yet, he'd withhold on any given day.
I was distraught, paranoid, a ghost;
Driving one day, a shotgun in my ear,
Another day, a fist to the face.
I still don't remember how I got away,
But I'm alive and the dark memories
haunt me...I guess a higher power
Thought me worthy of redeeming grace.
