Poet of the week, no 17, 05.06.16

Poet of the Week no 17 goes to +David Palmer for his poem Chenois Creek, for his contribution to POETS, and his dedicated support of the members.

CHENOIS CREEK (#127)
By David Palmer
31-May, 2016
Bellevue, Washington

Today’s slow, unhurried meander
Through graceful grassland, bending bow-curve right
Then left wandering through fallow farmland’s
Benign neglect. Nothing thrives here beyond
The monoculture growth on muddy banks.
Spawning chinook salmon, steelhead migrate
Here no longer, her pools abandoned --
Riparian shade trees logged for pulp.
Still this little creek deserves grateful
Thought, despite weakening strength in pursuit
Of Progress. She drains the hills and hollows
Carrying our fertilizer nitrites
Into salt marshes on Gray’s Harbor’s shore,
Cleansing what pours into the Pacific.
